Steps to Create your DMCA Takedown Notice

  1. Login into the DMCA Protection Portal. Click login.dmca.com enter your username and password.
  2. Hover over the Protection and select DIY Cases (Do it yourself) or click here: DIY Cases.
  3. Select the “New DIY Takedown” tab.
  4. Fill in the Subject line.
    1. This is for your personal reference and does not show up in any of the document templates. It’s recommended to note the infringing site name e.g. "Takedown from Smith.com".
  5. Choose whether this is a personal or business takedown.
  6. Fill in the “Stolen Content URL / Location".
    1. This is the location of the stolen content. Make certain to add the "http://" where needed. We suggest you copy it straight from the website location window as this will fill in the http:// information.
    2. When you have added this information, the program will automatically fill in the IP address for you. It will be a set of numbers resembling 65.52.209.102.
  7. Fill in the “Where was it copied from?” This is the location of the original content again we suggest you copy it straight from the website location window.
  8. Fill in the “Describe what happened in detail”
    1. See solutions - Part 4 - SHOW proof of copyright.
    2. Be concise in your description.
    3. State only the facts.
    4. Do Not get into emotions.
    5. e.g. "The following site http://www.theirsite.com has taken content from my site http://www.mysite.com. As the copyright owner I am requesting the following infringements be removed immediately."
      1. Source URL: http://www.mysite.com/homepage “copied text from my site”.
      2. Infringing URL: http://www.theirsite.com/homepage “copied text from their site”.
  9. Check the box for “I swear under penalty of perjury that I have reasonable good faith belief that use of the material in the manner specified above is not authorized by me, the company I represent, its agents, or the law. The information provided herein is accurate to the best of my knowledge.”
  10. Review your entries then select SAVE.
  11. You will be taken to another page called case list. You should now see the case you just completed with a DMCA.com Takedown CASE #. You now have 4 options:
    1. EDIT – Should you need to change any details.
    2. PREVIEW – This will allow you to see what the DMCA takedown notice will look like.
    3. DOWNLOAD PDF – This is the DMCA takedown notice document that you will need to email to the infringing site and the hosting ISP.
    4. DELETE – Should you choose to discontinue the case.
  12. Preview first to make sure the PDF looks right, and that the case information is correct. If corrections need to be made, click back and select your case.
  13. You are now ready to:
    1. Download Notice PDF version of the DMCA Takedown.
    2. Email the Notice to the infringing website.
    3. Email the Notice to the infringing website's ISP hosting service.
